The Train Roofs

Railway carriage roofs were traditionally sealed using a canvas-and-linseed-oil method. First, the timber roof was smoothed and any gaps were filled with putty, then a coat of boiled linseed oil was brushed on to seal the surface. Heavy duck canvas was stretched tightly over the roof and pressed into the fresh oil, then additional coats of linseed oil or “dope” were applied to tighten and waterproof the fabric. Once dry, the roof was painted, creating a durable, weatherproof covering that protected the carriage for many years. This is what we are attempting on this carriage. It is a very slow process, but we are well on our way to getting it finished. Once it is completed we will then start on the restoring the rest of the carriage. The weather hasn’t been kind to us over the last 12 months which of course has delayed the restoration project. But we won’t give up, as we are all keen to see the carriages completed.

The Gardens

The bushland, lakes, and gardens around Coal Creek are truly magnificent, but they require constant care. During the winter months, it’s fairly manageable to stay on top of the maintenance. However, once spring and summer arrive, it becomes an all-hands-on-deck effort every day. The lawns alone keep us busy, not to mention the endless whipper-snipping and weed control. This naturally pulls us away from other maintenance projects, but it’s essential work — the gardens are a major part of what makes Coal Creek so special, and we’re all proud to help keep them that way.

Scan to Learn More

At Coal Creek, we are using QR codes and avatars on selected buildings to bring the history of the site to life in an engaging and interactive way. Visitors can scan the QR codes using their mobile phones to meet virtual characters who share stories, insights, and historical context about the building or the people who once worked or lived there. This technology allows us to combine education and storytelling, making the heritage experience more immersive and memorable for visitors of all ages. We really hope you find the avatars useful and informative, and would value any feedback. Importantly, using the QR codes does not download anything onto your phone — the avatars and content are streamed and disappear once they have been viewed, leaving no trace on your device. This allows visitors to enjoy a seamless, safe, and fully immersive heritage experience without any impact on their personal devices.
